We, The Fair Trade Furniture Co Ltd, set out around 2002 to create a new business that would take the principles of Fair Trade and apply them in an original way to the furniture market.
Our core idea was to create a ‘feelgood chair’ that would allow the customer to feel good in body mind and spirit.
By teaming up with Swedish designer Tord Kjellstrom we created a completely new collection of furniture designed for use in garden rooms and light living spaces. The collection now comprises five unique chair designs, and each chair has a range of matching furniture comprising sofas, tables, footstools and accessories.
After 5 years of planning, preparation, and product development, we finally opened for business in December 2007. We sell mainly direct to the public through outdoor shows and other display opportunities. We also have a small number of retail and display partners who sell the furniture on our behalf.
Our Fair Trade partners are based in Java, Indonesia. These comprise a family-owned carpentry-based business in Kendal called Pondok Kayu Tropis, run by an enterprising Indonesian woman called Tri Dalke and her partner Tommy Fredrikkson – who is a long-standing member of the Fair Trade family, having founded Arum Dalu on Bali many years ago. Our other partner is INORI, run by Deddy Heriyanto, who co-ordinates the Pakno weaving workshop, a carpentry group catering for the needs of disabled people (Mandiri Craft) and a carpentry-based firm called KWAS.
